Tradition of saying White Rabbits!
I first heard about “White Rabbits!” from my friend, Trisha Posner (by the way she published a great book — The Pharmacist of Auschwitz: The Untold Story) posts this great tradition on her Facebook page. Every month I see it and say damn she beat me to it again! This is the month that I am going to get her beat her saying it first…
In the best spirit of the British childhood superstition,
WHITE RABBITS!
WHITE RABBITS!
WHITE RABBITS!
Remember, be the first of your friends to say it three times at midnight of a new month, and you are showered with good luck and magic. We all can use such magic and luck in our lives!!!
It may be silly, but every time I see it, I smile. Much thanks to Trisha to thank for that smile to start the first day of the first month.. Then again everyone should have a friend in life that has a way of making you smile. Perhaps each month she is that little spark of magic for me. Next month, why don’t you give it a try. Be the first one to say “White Rabbits!” three times and shower yourself with a little bit of magic!
Where does this tradition come from?
Where it comes from nobody really knows, and the earliest written record of saying “rabbit, rabbit” is from 1909, from an English periodical Notes And Queries. The author wrote “My two daughters are in the habit of saying ‘Rabbits!’ on the first day of each month. They must be spoke aloud, and be the first word said in the month… Other children, I find, use the same formula.” In the 1990’s the popular TV channel Nickelodeon started “Rabbit Rabbit Day” so it continues on as a rite of childhood.
Traditions & Superstitions
My British grandmother never taught us that tradition. That is okay, I claim it now. What traditions and superstitions did you grow up with and continue? Or better yet, what ones have you started and why? Sometimes silly traditions and superstitions are about connection. Connecting us to one another in a unique way that brings joy to us. Have a very happy month!!!!
