Is It Spiritual to Take Action — Or Should I Just Pray About It?
Recently one of my students asked is it spiritual to take action, or should I just pray about it? I stopped for a moment and answered it honestly. What are you feeling drawn to do. This question lives in the heart of many spiritual seekers.
When the world feels heavy — with injustice, pain, or confusion — what’s the spiritual way forward?
Is it better to stay in prayer and trust the unseen forces?
Or is it our responsibility to roll up our sleeves and act?
Both Prayer and Action Are Sacred — But Neither Is Easy
Prayer connects us to higher wisdom and brings peace amid chaos.
But sometimes prayer feels like waiting, especially when urgent issues demand attention.
Action is tangible and immediate.
It lets us honor our values with our hands and voices.
Yet action without spiritual grounding can lead to burnout or frustration.
My Journey: From Healing to Speaking Out
Last year, my heart was heavy. I wasn’t ready to speak out about social injustice or political issues. Mentally and physically, I needed to focus on my own healing.
I dug deep into that healing work, honoring what I needed to restore my strength and balance. As that healing unfolded, I began to feel empowered to speak out again — to write and share about injustice.
Yes, I have fears of being targeted. But reading the Diary of Anne Frank helped me understand why so many stay silent.
It’s fear — fear of retribution, of danger, of being alone in the fight.
Understanding that fear doesn’t mean I accept it; it means I see the human reality behind silence.
Holding the Paradox: Stillness and Courage
Spirit doesn’t demand perfection or purity. It invites a dynamic balance — prayer fueling courage, and action expressing faith.
Sometimes we need to sit quietly, trusting the process. Sometimes we need to step forward boldly, even amid fear.
Your Path Is Personal — And It Can Change
There’s no one “right” approach. Your path may shift with your gifts, experiences, and energy. Listen deeply to your intuition, supported by spiritual practice.
Ask yourself:
- When do I feel called to hold space and pray?
- When does Spirit nudge me toward movement and action?
- How do these two work together in my life?
