Divination Tools: Finding What Speaks to You
Ever wonder how Spirit speaks to you? The messages might come through cards, ribbons, music, or even a quiet nudge. Let’s explore the divination tools that help us listen.
Finding Your Path: How Divination Speaks
One morning, a student came to me feeling stuck and unsure about a decision. Together, we explored ribbons from my collection — some over fifty years old, others gifted by students over the years — and noticed patterns that seemed to tell a story. The guidance was subtle but meaningful, leaving the student with a renewed sense of clarity.
At other times, I draw tarot cards, letting intuition or music guide the interpretation. Each session unfolds differently, showing how Spirit can communicate in layers and through varied methods. Moments like these remind me that guidance comes in countless ways, and every tool has its own voice.

Seeing Spirit Through Personal Experience
Some methods call to us immediately, others quietly, and some not at all. And that is the beauty of it — guidance does not come one way for everyone.
I am fascinated by runes, yet they do nothing for me personally. Some tarot decks, though beautiful, fall flat when I try to read them. Meanwhile, ribbon reading and certain tarot practices consistently resonate, offering clarity and connection. I follow cues from Spirit, trusting what feels alive rather than what looks impressive on paper.

Tools That Truly Resonate
Beyond these examples, countless other ways exist to receive messages. Astrology reveals patterns through planetary cycles. Numerology uncovers tendencies in names, dates, and numbers. A dream journal allows Spirit to speak through symbols and imagery. Practices like vision boards, sigils, or tea leaf readings invite reflection, each offering insight in its own language.
Energy-based practices are equally valuable. Pendulums, pendulum boards, automatic writing, spirit boards, spirit trumpets, Feng Shui, chakra work, and aura reading tune us into subtle energies, both internal and external. Some I teach to students; others I admire from afar. All remind us that there is no single “right” way to receive guidance.

Building Your Personal Toolbox
Noticing which methods resonate is part of the exploration, and honoring that is key. Some tools speak clearly while others leave you cold. That is not failure — it is information. It shows where your intuition is strongest, where your connection to Spirit is natural, and where you might explore next.
Many teachers, including my mentor Jack Rudy, called divination tools a “toolbox.” Each tool helps us communicate with Spirit, offering guidance, reflection, and insight. Over time, we learn which tools resonate, which bring clarity, and how best to refine our connection.

Experiment, Combine, and Listen
I encourage experimentation. Perhaps you start the day with tarot reflection, use a pendulum to clarify a question, and close by journaling dreams. Or symbolic objects, vision boards, or music might bring messages to life. Notice what feels effortless, alive, and insightful. Over time, you’ll develop a personal practice that is meaningful and empowering.
Remember: not every tool will resonate. Some may feel immediate, others distant. That is part of the process — recognizing what truly speaks to you and what is simply interesting to observe. Your toolbox may look different from mine, and that is exactly as it should be.

Understanding Context & Practice
Some professional platforms, such as NSAC-affiliated circles, restrict certain tools in specific settings. In personal practice, however, these methods are simply ways to refine your connection with Spirit. The focus is on awareness, reflection, and trusting the messages you receive.

Connection Is at the Heart
Divination, at its heart, is about connection — with Spirit, energy, and yourself. Tools are guides, not rules. Trusting your intuition, staying open, and honoring your personal resonance allows you to navigate subtle messages in your life.
Reflective Questions:
- Which divination tools naturally draw your attention, and how might you explore them in your practice this week?
- Are there methods you admire but haven’t yet tried, and what might that exploration teach you?
- Consider creating your own personal toolbox — which tools feel alive to you, and how might you combine them to strengthen your connection with Spirit?
