Witnessing History

The frequency of courage is getting harder to achieve.  Have you ever wondered why?  Every aspect of our lives is full of fear, hate is thrown around easily and love is treated like a four letter word.  And not in a good way.  For a long time after reading The Diary of Anne Frank, I wondered how Hitler could do what he did—and how ordinary people could feel so powerless. I couldn’t understand how a society could allow hatred, fear, and cruelty to spread unchecked. Today, I watch in horror as echoes of that history unfold in modern times: the dehumanization of “the other,” the dismissal of uncomfortable truths, and the quiet normalization of fear. I feel terrified, frustrated, and at times powerless—but I will not be silent.

The “thief” I once feared in my own circles—the one that whispered I wasn’t enough—is the same thief that tells a society its individual voices don’t matter. It is the same mechanism of fear, just operating on a global scale.

Moving Through Fear

Feeling terror can be paralyzing, yet I have learned to pivot from fear into action. I start by grounding myself in clarity and love, then take tangible steps to speak, write, and teach. Even small acts, when aligned with courage and integrity, ripple outward. This is how I transform helplessness into purpose—and invite others to do the same.

The Power of Voice

Silence is never neutral. Silence allows fear to fester. This silence allows hate to grow. Silence allows the vulnerable to suffer without anyone standing up for them. But words, when spoken with intention, are profound. In metaphysical terms, sound is creation, and words carry energy. Our voices are not just tools—they are instruments of transformation. Each act of speaking truth strengthens the web of humanity, compassion, and accountability.

Ordinary People Can Make a Difference

We must remember that ordinary people—people like you and me—have the power to change the world when we refuse to be silent. We may not stop every injustice immediately, but each act of courage strengthens the very foundation of the world we wish to see.

I refuse to look away. I refuse to be silent. Let us speak, act, and stand with clarity, courage, and love. History has shown the consequences of silence, but together, we can choose differently.

Journal Prompts:

  • When have you felt powerless in the face of injustice, and how did you respond?
  • What fears hold you back from speaking your truth?
  • Name one small act you can take today to stand up for what’s right.
  • How do you personally define courage in everyday life?
  • Reflect on a moment when silence caused harm. How could speaking up have changed the outcome?
  • Visualize a world where your voice is heard and valued. What is the first thing you would say to help heal your community?
