The Two Wolves: Choosing Connection in a Disconnected World

After exploring the nature of evil in our last post, I keep returning to a simple truth: the choices we make every day shape the energy we live in. Even small, unnoticed actions ripple outward, feeding either fear, anger, and disconnection—or love, compassion, and alignment with Spirit.

The Story That Guides Me

I think of the Cherokee story about two wolves. Inside each of us, the wolves battle constantly. One stands for anger, pride, envy, and fear. The other embodies kindness, patience, hope, and love. When the boy asks which wolf wins, the grandfather says, “The one you feed.” That story is alive in me every day, reminding me that moral clarity isn’t theoretical—it’s practical, immediate, and intimate.

Disconnection: The Soil for the Bad Wolf

I see disconnection from Spirit as the soil in which the bad wolf grows. When we ignore our inner compass, even small frustrations, impatience, or gossip can feed fear and selfishness. I struggle with these, too. Gossip is my weakness, a quiet habit I’ve had to confront. Some days I win the battle; some days I don’t. Awareness, though, gives us a chance to choose differently next time.

Feeding the Good Wolf

Feeding the good wolf doesn’t require grand gestures. It’s found in small acts: pausing before speaking, reflecting before reacting, practicing gratitude, or simply noticing the tension rising within us. These moments strengthen our connection to Spirit and, over time, create an energy that fosters empathy, understanding, and integrity.

The Power of Letting Go

There’s also power in letting go. I’m reminded of the story of the two monks: one carried a woman across a river and moved on. The other held onto the act in judgment all day. The lesson is clear—holding on to resentment, guilt, or attachment fuels the bad wolf. Releasing what no longer serves us nurtures clarity and peace, making room for the good wolf to grow.

Practice and Reflection

The choice isn’t about perfection; it’s about participation. Each time we pause, reflect, and act from our highest values, we feed the wolf that embodies compassion, integrity, and connection. Our choices count. Each moment of awareness matters.

Journal Prompts for Reflection:

  • Which wolf have I been feeding most recently, and how can I redirect my energy?
  • When have I acted from disconnection, and what could I do differently next time?
  • What small, daily practice helps me stay aligned with Spirit?
  • Where do I need to let go to restore my inner clarity?
  • How might my choices today ripple outward into the world around me?

In the end, awareness is the key. Disconnection may be the root of chaos and harm, but conscious choice—the act of feeding the good wolf—remains our most powerful antidote. I hope these reflections remind you, as they do me, that we always have a choice: to release, to trust, and to grow.

I get a common question a lot lately - "What is Reincarnation?"  Reincarnation is the belief that after we die, our soul returns. Image of a monarch butterfly on a flower. Next post What is Reincarnation?
