If you have ever rolled dice to make a decision, you have participated in a very simple version of a much older practice. Cleromancy is a form of divination that uses random selection to seek insight, guidance, or an answer to a question. Dice can be used for this purpose, although cleromancy is not limited to dice.
The word comes from the Greek kleros, meaning lot or portion. Historically, people used various objects to cast lots, including stones, marked pieces of wood, bones, or other small objects. The underlying idea was that the random result could reveal something meaningful about a question or situation.
Dice are particularly convenient because their faces already provide a defined set of possible outcomes. A simple practice might involve assigning a meaning to each number before rolling and then considering the result in relation to the question being asked.
How Does Dice Divination Work?
There is no single system for practicing cleromancy. Some approaches use one die, while others use multiple dice. The numbers may have predetermined meanings, correspond to symbols, or simply provide a starting point for interpretation.
The important part is that the question comes before the throw. Rather than repeatedly rolling until you get an answer you like, you establish what you are asking and then consider what the result brings to your attention.
That makes cleromancy different from using dice to predict an exact future. The random result does not have to be treated as a fixed prediction. Instead, it can function as a prompt for reflection, much like other forms of divination.
You can also use dice without an elaborate system. Ask a clear question, assign meanings to the possible numbers, roll the die, and consider what the result suggests. Your interpretation may be influenced by the question, the circumstances, and what immediately stands out to you.
Like other divination practices, cleromancy can be used as a tool for perspective rather than a substitute for judgment. The value may not be in the number itself, but in what the number causes you to consider.
A random throw can give you something to think about. What you do with that information is still up to you.
