Stop Calling It “Empathy” When It’s a Lack of Boundaries

One of the most common misconceptions I see in spiritual circles is people confusing empathy with self-sacrifice.

They describe themselves as empaths because they constantly absorb other people’s emotions, carry everyone else’s problems, and feel responsible for fixing situations that were never theirs to solve. They believe this is a spiritual gift.

More often than not, it is a lack of boundaries.

True empathy allows you to understand another person’s experience without losing yourself in it. A lack of boundaries causes you to take ownership of emotions, responsibilities, and outcomes that belong to someone else.

Those are two very different things.

A Lack of Boundaries Feels Like Responsibility

Many people wear exhaustion as proof that they care. They answer every phone call, solve every crisis, and put everyone else’s needs ahead of their own. Over time, they become emotionally depleted and wonder why they feel so overwhelmed.

The answer is not that they care too much.  The answer is that they have never learned where they end and someone else begins.  A lack of boundaries often sounds like this:

  • “I have to fix this.”
  • “If they’re upset, it’s my responsibility.”
  • “I can’t say no because they’ll be disappointed.”

None of those thoughts come from healthy empathy. They come from believing that your value depends on carrying someone else’s emotional load.

Healthy empathy allows you to be compassionate without becoming consumed.

Compassion Doesn’t Require Self-Abandonment

One of the greatest lessons I have learned is that helping someone does not mean rescuing them.  In mediumship, tarot, and everyday life, I remind my students that our role is not to solve every problem. Our role is to offer insight, support, and encouragement while respecting another person’s ability to make their own choices.

That requires boundaries.  Without them, you eventually become exhausted, resentful, and emotionally unavailable—not because you stopped caring, but because you tried to carry what was never yours to carry.  The truth is that boundaries do not make you less compassionate. They make your compassion sustainable.

If you constantly feel drained by other people’s emotions, ask yourself an honest question: Is this empathy, or is it a lack of boundaries?

Learning the difference changes the way you show up in every relationship. You stop measuring love by how much you sacrifice. You stop confusing guilt with kindness. Most importantly, you discover that you can care deeply about others without abandoning yourself in the process.

Healthy boundaries do not limit your ability to love.

They give your love room to last.

“I am incredibly grateful for the 1:1 mentoring I received from Colleen. The insights I gained have been invaluable in my mediumship journey. She made me feel that I can do this and that perhaps some of the teachers I have been working with were not exactly the right fit.  The kindness and patience shown to me made the entire experience uplifting and transformative.
