I am often asked what is the first step in Mediumship, and most people bustle at my answer to trust. Mediumship asks us to do something counterintuitive. We are taught to think before we speak, to analyze and explain. In this work, we are asked to do the opposite: give what we receive, even before it makes sense. This is not easy. It goes against decades of habit.
Many beginners hesitate, searching for logic in every symbol or impression. I can see it on their faces: the pause, the doubt, the internal debate. Overthinking is the most common obstacle. Yet it is exactly what blocks spirit’s voice.
I remember the moment that reshaped my own practice. I was doing a reading for a woman when the first image that came to me was two kangaroos bouncing on a trampoline. My first thought: This makes no sense. Give me something else. But the image persisted. Then, a quiet voice inside said, Just give what you get. Don’t explain it. Trust it. I did.
The woman burst into tears. Her gymnastics teacher had nicknamed her and her best friend “the kangaroos” because she could never get them off the trampoline. That one moment taught me more than any explanation could. Trusting the first impression, no matter how strange, was the key to clear connection.
When I teach students, I remind them of this lesson constantly. Stop overthinking. Speak what arrives. Odd or unexpected images often carry the most truth. Messages do not need to make sense to you; they need to reach the person on the other side. Over time, giving what you receive becomes second nature. Confidence grows, and the channel opens more fully.
Mediumship is as much about letting go as it is about practice. Self-awareness is the bridge. Noticing hesitation, recognizing overthinking, and stepping past it — even a small step — strengthens connection. Each moment you trust what you receive builds a foundation for clarity and ease in future sessions.
