Why Do I Sense Spirit When I Fall Asleep?

One of the more common questions I hear is about what people experience right as they’re falling asleep. Not dreams, exactly. Not fully awake, either. That in-between space.

For some, it’s a sense of presence. For others, it’s heightened intuition, vivid imagery, or the feeling that something is trying to get their attention. And for people who are spiritually inclined, it often gets interpreted as sensing Spirit more clearly.

The In-Between State

There’s a reason that moment feels different.

As the body starts to fall asleep, the mind shifts out of its usual, structured way of processing things. The constant filtering, analyzing, and noise of waking consciousness begins to soften.

You’re not fully asleep, but you’re also not fully anchored in the physical world in the same way. That alone can make perception feel sharper, stranger, or more meaningful.

Sensitivity vs. Interpretation

The experience itself is real. The interpretation of it can vary.

Some people understand it as a spiritual connection—communication, presence, or awareness that becomes easier to access when the mind is quieter.

Others would describe the same state in psychological terms: the brain moving through transitional phases, where imagery, sensation, and perception become more fluid and less constrained.

Those explanations don’t necessarily cancel each other out. But they do point to something important:

The state you’re in may be more open.  What you believe about it shapes how you understand what you’re noticing.

Why It Stands Out

Experiences in that state tend to feel more intense because there’s less distraction.  During the day, your attention is divided. At night, especially in that in-between space, there’s not much competing for your awareness.

So whatever you feel—presence, emotion, imagery—it can feel amplified.

Something to Pay Attention To

What matters more than labeling the experience is how you relate to it.

  • Does it feel grounding or unsettling?
  • Clear or confusing?
  • Consistent, or reactive to your thoughts and expectations?

Those questions tend to tell you more than immediately deciding what it “is.” Because that space between waking and sleep is naturally more open.

What you encounter there may say as much about your own mind and sensitivity as it does about anything outside of you.
