Trusting Spirit: Moving Beyond the Need for Instant Validation

Many new mediums face the challenge of seeking instant validation. We want to be right, to help Spirit, and to give the sitter the perfect message. But this pressure often comes from within. We get so focused on the outcome—on hearing the sitter say, “Yes, that’s right”—that we forget to trust the process.

When I first started, I fixated on getting instant confirmation. I wanted every message to be perfect, and I overthought everything. Instead of letting Spirit guide me, I worried too much about whether the sitter would immediately recognize the spirit or validate the details. My need for validation held me back and caused me to stumble.

Reflecting on that time, I now see where that pressure came from. My background as a Consultant and REALTOR trained me to overthink things. In those roles, I had to anticipate every scenario, but in mediumship, that mindset created a barrier. Overthinking blocked my connection to Spirit. In mediumship, you have to trust, not control. Spirit speaks in its own time, and it’s our job to let go and allow the message to come through naturally.

Planting Seeds for the Future

Sometimes, the message you deliver won’t get immediate validation. You might be planting a seed, or you might be watering one that’s already there. The sitter might not be ready to hear it yet, or it could take time for them to process. That’s okay. It’s not about instant feedback; it’s about trusting that you’ve delivered what was needed.

I’ve witnessed this firsthand. I remember seeing the same message delivered to someone during church services over a ten-week period by different mediums. None of them knew each other or knew the person had already received the message. But the message kept coming because the sitter wasn’t ready to accept it. Sometimes, the timing just isn’t right, and as mediums, we have to set our egos aside and trust that the message will resonate when the sitter is ready.

Trust Spirit, Not Validation

The key to overcoming the need for instant validation is to shift your focus from seeking confirmation to trusting Spirit. The sitter might not immediately recognize the spirit you’re connecting with, and that’s fine. Sometimes, the sitter doesn’t realize who you have until you’ve finished delivering the message.

When you let go of needing that “Yes, that’s right” right away, you make space for Spirit to work freely. The message might not make sense to the sitter at first, but as they reflect on it, things often fall into place. Sometimes Spirit has to build a picture, and that takes time.  Trusting Spirit means believing that what you’re sharing will serve the sitter, even if it takes time for the message to fully land.

Release the Need for Perfection

The desire for validation ties directly into the pressure to be perfect. We want to give a flawless reading every time, but mediumship doesn’t work that way. It’s an evolving process, and there’s no such thing as a perfect message. The more you release the need to get everything right, the more open you become to Spirit’s guidance.

When you stop focusing on being perfect, you allow the reading to flow naturally. The sitter relaxes, and Spirit communicates with more clarity. Letting go of that pressure frees you to be present in the moment and deepens your connection with Spirit.

Final Thoughts

Moving beyond the need for instant validation is a key part of developing as a medium. It’s natural to want to be right and to help the sitter, but the real work lies in trusting Spirit.

Your role is to deliver the message, not to control how or when it resonates with the sitter. Trust that Spirit knows what’s best, and sometimes, the message will take time to sink in. By letting go of the need for immediate feedback, you create a more open space for Spirit to work. That’s where the true power of mediumship lies.
