Growing Into Spiritual Maturity: Validation Is Not Development

Awakening can happen in a moment. Maturity is built over a lifetime.

Every spiritual journey begins with a moment of recognition. Sometimes it happens through an experience that changes how we see ourselves. Recognition sometimes it happens when someone reflects something back to us that feels deeply accurate. Sometimes it happens when we discover an ability we never realized we had.

Those moments matter. They can open a door we did not know existed.

I know this because I experienced it myself. When I first began developing my abilities, each validation gave me confidence to continue. A connection that resonated with someone, a message that brought comfort, or a moment that felt impossible to explain helped me trust that I was moving in the right direction.

There is nothing wrong with wanting that reassurance. Validation often serves an important purpose. It encourages us to continue learning and gives us the courage to explore something unfamiliar.

The Difference Between Validation and Development

The challenge comes when we confuse validation with development.

They are not the same thing.

A moment of accuracy does not create mastery. A meaningful experience does not automatically create wisdom. Discovering a gift does not mean we have learned how to use it responsibly.

That lesson took time for me to understand.  Like many people, I started with enthusiasm and curiosity. I wanted to learn, practice, and share what I was experiencing. Over the years, I discovered that growth required more than having a positive experience. It required patience, discipline, humility, and a willingness to recognize that I would always have more to learn.

Spiritual development asks us to move beyond the question, “Do I have an ability?”

The deeper questions become, “Am I responsible with this ability? Am I willing to receive feedback? Am I developing the emotional maturity and discernment necessary to serve others?”

Those questions do not always feel comfortable because they challenge our desire for certainty. They ask us to look honestly at ourselves instead of simply seeking confirmation.

Growth Happens Beyond the Moment of Awakening

The spiritual path does not only reveal what we can do. It reveals who we are becoming.

True development happens in the quiet moments that receive little attention. It happens when we practice, reflect, make mistakes, and learn from them. It happens when we choose humility over recognition and service over validation.

This is why maturity cannot be rushed.

We can have a powerful awakening in a single moment, but we cannot build wisdom overnight. Wisdom grows through experience. It grows through self-awareness. It grows through the willingness to continue learning even after we believe we understand.

A spiritual gift is not measured by how quickly someone discovers it. It is measured by how responsibly they carry it.

The Lifelong Practice of Spiritual Maturity

The longer I walk this path, the more I understand that spiritual growth is not about reaching a place where we have all the answers. It is about becoming someone who continues to ask better questions.

Maturity does not remove our curiosity. It deepens it.  Maturity does not make us less open. It makes us more discerning.  Spiritual Maturity does not diminish the wonder of spiritual experiences. It helps us hold those experiences with greater responsibility.
