Growing Into Spiritual Maturity: Potential Is Not Expertise

Awakening reveals possibility, but development creates wisdom

One of the greatest compliments we can receive is that we have potential. Potential recognizes something within us that is waiting to be developed. It suggests possibility, talent, and an ability that deserves attention.  Yet potential is not expertise.  Expertise takes time.

Early in my own spiritual journey, I received encouragement from people who recognized potential in me. Their support mattered because it gave me confidence to continue exploring and developing my abilities. When we are beginning any new path, we often need people who can see something in us before we fully see it ourselves.

But over time, I learned an important distinction.

Potential is not expertise.  Your potential is the beginning of a journey. Expertise is what develops through years of practice, reflection, learning, and experience.

I have encountered this truth in different areas of my life. Before my work in spiritual development grew, I spent years working as a consultant. One of the lessons I learned was that talent alone does not determine whether someone is ready for greater responsibility.

Some people have natural ability, but they do not yet have the experience to apply that ability effectively. Others may not appear as naturally gifted at first, but they develop because they remain curious, accept feedback, and continue learning.

The difference is not always talent.  The difference is maturity.

The gap between having a gift and developing wisdom

The same principle applies to spiritual work.

Having an intuitive experience does not automatically make someone an experienced intuitive. Receiving a meaningful message does not mean someone has mastered the responsibility of delivering messages to others. Feeling connected to spirit does not replace the years of development needed to understand boundaries, interpretation, ethics, and discernment.

This is where many people struggle. We live in a culture that celebrates beginnings. We celebrate the discovery of a gift, the first breakthrough, and the moment when someone realizes they may have an ability.  Those moments are beautiful.  They are also only the beginning.

The quieter part of the journey receives much less attention. The hours of practice. The uncomfortable feedback. The moments when we discover that our first interpretation was incomplete. The lessons that teach us humility and patience.

Those are the experiences that shape us.  A gift may open the door, but wisdom determines how we walk through it.

Expertise is built through humility and continued learning

The people who have influenced me most throughout my life have rarely been the ones who believed they had all the answers. They remained students even after years of experience. They understood that growth did not end when they gained recognition.

True expertise does not come from claiming certainty. It comes from developing good judgment.

It shows itself through humility, consistency, compassion, and the willingness to continue learning. It requires us to recognize that serving others is a responsibility, not simply an opportunity to share what we know.

I have also learned that expertise cannot be measured only by years of practice or the number of classes someone has completed. Experience matters, but how someone approaches that experience matters just as much.

• Are they willing to receive feedback?
• Are they willing to acknowledge mistakes?
• Are they more interested in being seen as knowledgeable or in becoming truly helpful?

These questions reveal the difference between potential and expertise.  Potential deserves encouragement. It deserves support and the opportunity to grow.

But expertise must be earned.  Spiritual maturity develops when we understand that discovering a gift is only the first step. The real journey is learning how to carry that gift with wisdom, responsibility, and care for others.

Potential shows us what is possible.  Maturity teaches us what to do with it.
