Woman delivering an inspirational talk at a podium.

What is Inspirational Speaking?

Inspirational speaking is a powerful tool for uplifting, motivating, and connecting with an audience on a deep level. Within the context of Spiritualist churches, it involves delivering a talk on a specific topic that typically lasts between 15 and 20 minutes. How speakers approach this task can vary widely, offering a beautiful spectrum of styles and techniques.

Approaches to Inspirational Speaking

There are three main approaches to inspirational speaking:

  • Spirit-Led: Some speakers come completely unprepared, allowing Spirit to guide them in the moment. They trust in the flow of inspiration to provide exactly what is needed for the audience.
  • Structured and Prepared: Other speakers meticulously plan and research their talks, crafting every detail with care.
  • Blended Approach: Many, including myself, fall into this category. We prepare a structured talk, conducting research and outlining key points, but remain open to Spirit’s influence. This allows us to go beyond the original plan and deliver a message that often resonates even more deeply than expected.

My mentor taught me a guiding principle for creating impactful talks: include three essential components. First, make people laugh. Second, tie the talk to one of the Spiritualist principles. Finally, leave the audience with something thought-provoking to take home.

The Power of Inspirational Speaking

Inspirational speaking has the ability to touch lives in profound ways. One of the most memorable examples from my own experience took place at Lily Dale, where I spoke about Mary Anthony, the lesser-known sister of Susan B. Anthony. Highlighting Mary’s contributions to the women’s movement sparked heartfelt gratitude from attendees who were unaware of her significance. While Susan was out fight for women’s rights, Mary was living the role back home  Moments like these remind me of the far-reaching impact a thoughtful and heartfelt talk can have.

My mentor embodied the essence of inspirational speaking. His talks were legendary because they connected with every individual in the audience. Each person left with exactly what they needed to hear, no matter how diverse their experiences.

Skills and Techniques for Effective Speaking

To become a successful inspirational speaker, certain skills and techniques are essential:

  • Research: Even if your talk is Spirit-led, having a solid foundation of knowledge allows for richer, more informed messages. Depth in understanding a topic gives flexibility and credibility.
  • Managing Anxiety: Nerves are natural, but they can be managed through mindful breathing and focusing on friendly faces in the audience. Grounding yourself before stepping up to speak helps you stay present and connected.
  • Connection: Engaging with your audience is key. Find ways to make them laugh, reflect, and relate to your message on a personal level.

Understanding the Purpose

Inspirational speaking often serves a dual purpose: it helps others while fostering the speaker’s personal growth. Sometimes, the message delivered is meant for a single person in the audience, and that is enough. Knowing you’ve touched even one soul deeply is incredibly fulfilling.

Advice for Beginners

Starting out as an inspirational speaker can be daunting, but remember: it’s okay if your first talk isn’t perfect. Every experience offers valuable lessons. Here are some tips for beginners:

  • Begin with small, supportive audiences to build confidence.
  • Focus on your message rather than worrying about perfection.
  • Trust that each talk will teach you something, helping you grow as a speaker.

Final Thoughts

Inspirational speaking is about more than delivering words—it’s about creating a connection, sharing wisdom, and opening hearts. Whether Spirit guides you, preparation grounds you, or a mix of both empowers you, your voice has the potential to inspire and uplift those who hear it. Embrace the journey, and trust that your message will reach those who need it most.
