Practicing the Pause: Strengthening Your Connection in Mediumship

I often tell my students that they need to practice the pause while delivering a message from Spirit.  As mediums, our connection to Spirit is built on trust and clarity. One of the most powerful yet often overlooked tools to enhance that connection is the simple act of pausing. In the rush of receiving information, it’s tempting to deliver everything at once, but practicing the pause allows the message to land with more impact and gives both the medium and the recipient time to process.

Why Is the Pause So Important?

In mediumship, information can come fast and in multiple forms—images, words, feelings, or even physical sensations. Without slowing down, you risk overwhelming yourself and the sitter, causing important details to be missed or misunderstood. Pausing between pieces of information gives the sitter time to reflect and connect with what you’ve shared.

For example, if you receive an image of a woman holding a book, rather than rushing to explain what the book symbolizes, simply describe the image and pause. This allows the recipient to process the image and offer feedback, which can often lead to deeper connections. Maybe that book was special to their loved one in Spirit, but they need a moment to recognize the significance.

Creating Space for Spirit

Pausing isn’t just beneficial for the recipient—it creates space for Spirit to provide more clarity. In the quiet moment after delivering a piece of evidence, you may receive additional information that helps strengthen the message. The pause creates a moment of stillness where Spirit can guide you further. It’s in these pauses that unexpected details often surface, making the reading even more meaningful.

The Power of Reflection for the Sitter

For the recipient, pausing gives them the opportunity to reflect on what they’ve just heard. Sometimes, a sitter may not immediately recognize a detail, especially if it’s tied to a distant memory or something they weren’t expecting. By practicing the pause, you give them the space to connect the dots on their own without feeling rushed. This allows them to engage with the message at a deeper level and can lead to more profound realizations.

How to Practice the Pause in Readings

Deliver One Piece of Information at a Time

Instead of overwhelming the sitter with multiple pieces of evidence, share each one individually and allow a brief pause after each. This gives both you and the sitter time to process the information.

Breathe Between Messages

Taking a breath between messages helps you slow down. It also allows Spirit to give you more insight or a new piece of information before moving forward. Inhale, pause, and exhale slowly to keep a calm, grounded presence.

Observe the Sitter’s Response

During the pause, watch the sitter for non-verbal cues. Are they thinking deeply? Do they show recognition in their expression? This feedback can help guide how you deliver the next piece of information, allowing you to adapt to their pace.

Embrace the Stillness

In mediumship, the pause isn’t just an empty moment—it’s a space of reflection, connection, and deeper understanding. By practicing the pause, you enhance your ability to deliver clear, powerful messages from Spirit and create a richer experience for the sitter. Remember, it’s not about how quickly you deliver the message, but about the quality and clarity of what you share.
