Image of a diver taking a perfect dive. What so many forget is that there are hours of practice for that one moment.

There is this drive to being perfect in Mediumship.   I am not sure where it comes from, but many students are driven by it.  You can stall your Mediumship growth before you even begin.  It happens the moment you leave your heart and slip into your head. Fear and ego take over. You start asking yourself if you’re ready, worthy, or “good enough” to start this work.

I’ve been there. Before I began my own development, and even during it, waves of fear came up. Some still appear now. I see the same fears in my students, too—they’re common in almost every Medium, no matter where they live or how long they’ve been studying. You are not alone if you are feeling it. The challenge is moving past it.  I wrote my book Guided by Spirit to help those that are struggling.

Common Fears

Here are the thoughts I hear most:

  • Am I good enough?
    • Yes you are!
  • What if I’m not ready?
    • You have to start somewhere.
  • I feel like an imposter.
    • You are not, you are learning
  • What if I’m not a Medium?
    • We all are, the only difference between me and you is that I have failed more times than you thought to try.
  • I’m excited and nervous.
    • Use that energy, it is completely normal.
  • Can I give readings on command?
    • Eventually yes, but at first you have to learn how to connect.
  • Is this path even for me?
    • Only you can answer that question after you know how it works for you.  You don’t have to get on stage, or even give private readings.   You can use it for your own personal use.

Mediums are not perfect. Too often, people let perfect get in the way of good. Mistakes happen, and it’s how you handle them and move forward that matters. You don’t need to be flawless—you need to be real, honest, and open.  Sometimes you are only meant to plant a seed for someone. Not every reading will be a life-changing experience—and that’s okay. Your role is to be honest, open, and present.

When you stay in your head, ego takes over.  “What if I’m wrong?”  “What if they don’t like what I say?”

When you are clear about your boundaries—what you will and won’t engage with—it becomes easier to trust yourself and your connection. Love and trust together push fear and negativity aside, opening your true connection.

Mediumship Development is never only about technique. It’s about mindset, courage, and trust. It’s a lifelong journey. As long as you are alive, you will be developing as a Medium.

And if you ever have a bad experience with a teacher? Don’t give up. Your connection with Spirit is bigger than any one moment. You’re allowed to start. Don’t let a bad experience get in the way of your development. You’re allowed to grow.
