Spiritual Song Series – “Daybreak” by Barry Manilow

Here is #14 in a series of an occasional sharing of an “inspirational” song. We put “inspirational” in quotes because this will not necessarily be not in the traditional sense, like something you might sing in church.

Colleen and I recently traveled to Radio City Music Hall for a concert by Barry Manilow, one of the many times he’s performed at that famous venue.  While Barry may be best known for his two Number One ballads like “Mandy” and “I Write The Songs” (which, by the way, he didn’t write– it was penned by Beach Boy Bruce Johnston), and “Copacabana,” a disco story song that he didn’t think would become a hit, Colleen and I were both really happy that he also sang “Daybreak” from his 1976 album This One’s For You.

It’s not hard to understand the meaning of this song: be optimistic, even though it’s not easy!  Maybe with a little help; he sings “It’s time we let the spirit come in.”  I’d never seen Barry in concert before (Colleen’s only other time was when he toured to support the album Even Now).  But it’s clear that he values connection and understanding– and at 81 years young, he’s still “Singin’ to the world!”  And that night, the entire Radio City Music Hall audience sang right along!
