Think Before You Sign: Petition Season in Rochester

Petition season is here, and in Rochester, that means you may be asked to sign forms supporting local initiatives or candidates. At first glance, it might seem harmless—a simple signature to help someone make their voice heard. But experience has taught me that signing a petition without understanding its context can have real consequences.

In 2024, I ran for an unpaid volunteer position in Irondequoit. Some people didn’t want anyone with a different perspective on the ballot. Instead of fair competition, there was a dirty campaign against volunteers who simply wanted to contribute and have a voice. It was a stark reminder: sometimes the stakes are higher than they appear, even in volunteer roles.

Here’s what I recommend before signing a petition:

  • Know the Cause: Understand exactly what you’re supporting. Ask questions and read the petition carefully.
  • Check Who’s Behind It: Make sure the petition comes from a legitimate source, not just someone pushing a personal agenda.
  • Consider the Implications: Your signature creates a public record. Know how it could be used.
  • Pause and Reflect: Don’t feel pressured. Taking a moment to think protects you and your community.

Signing a petition can be a powerful act—but it’s also a responsibility. Be informed, be thoughtful, and don’t be afraid to say no if something doesn’t align with your values. Your voice matters, and your signature should reflect it.
