The Art of Learning Tarot: Balancing Structure and Intuition

Tarot mastery is something everyone wants when they begin using Tarot.  When learning Tarot, it’s tempting to “toss the book” and just “read what you see.” Some teachers encourage this, but it does a disservice to Tarot and their students. It’s crucial to learn the structure, rules, and foundational aspects first. This knowledge provides a solid base for your intuition to build upon.

Learning the basics creates a strong foundation, like constructing a house. Once you have this foundation, your intuition becomes the interior designer, pulling everything together beautifully. You need both structure and intuition to become a skilled Tarot reader.

Basics Help Ground Us

A Tarot reader who ignores the structure often gives un-grounded readings. On the other hand, a reader who sticks too rigidly to traditional meanings may deliver stiff readings. The key is finding a balance between the two. Learn the meanings of the cards and trust your intuition to enhance your readings.

People often want to push the envelope, but without understanding the envelope, they’re just poking at air and hoping for the best. This lack of awareness can lead to ineffective readings, leaving everyone involved unsatisfied.

Foundational knowledge and intuition go hand in hand in tarot mastery. If you neglect to learn the basics, you’ll be caught off guard as a reader. Sometimes, you’ll need that well of information when your intuitive interpretation isn’t resonating. Continuous learning and studying can only improve your skills as a Tarot reader. It will never make you worse, only better.

The rule of “Yes and” allows for more possibilities, indicating there isn’t just one right way. This flexibility brings grace to your readings. While Tarot is nuanced and intuition plays a part, a basic understanding is essential to start. A good Tarot reader can seamlessly combine the meanings of the cards, intuitive insights, and storytelling to create a compelling message for the querent.

You can’t write a book without learning the letters, words, and sentences. Similarly, you can’t master Tarot without understanding its foundational elements. By learning the structure and embracing your intuition, you’ll find your readings become more accurate and meaningful.

In summary, respect the traditional structure of Tarot while allowing your intuition to guide you. This balance will enhance your readings, making them both grounded and insightful. Keep learning and trust your intuition. Both are essential for becoming a skilled Tarot reader.
