Senator Chuck Schumer: We Demand Action, Not Just Words
Senator Schumer,
You are right: autocrats lie. They spin fantasies, reject reality, and twist the truth to retain power. We know this—we live it every day. But with all due respect, your statement raises a question that has been simmering for years: what are you actually going to do about it?
This isn’t just talk; it’s about legislation. Champion bills to reform campaign finance and prevent money from drowning out the voices of everyday citizens. Push for federal laws that protect voting rights from partisan attacks. Ensure accountability for those who incite violence and attempt to subvert elections, no matter their rank or party. If you fail to act, the consequences for our democracy will be catastrophic. The American people are watching—and we demand concrete steps, not words.
The people of this country are exhausted.
Women’s rights are under attack. Immigrants endure unnecessary suffering. The government is dismantling systems designed to help those in need. Hackers have breached sensitive government data. Corporate interests thrive while families struggle. Citizens watch a system that serves only the powerful and lose faith in justice. Meanwhile, leaders choose caution and compromise over courage and accountability. The executive, legislative, and judicial branches no longer maintain a true balance of power.
Democracy fails not simply because autocrats lie—it fails because too many leaders name the problem without solving it, and because we allow them to get away with it.
Senator Schumer, the time for passivity is over. We demand that you, and all our leaders, act decisively to restore faith in the democracy you’ve sworn to protect. We are watching. The time to act is now.
Sincerely,
Rev. Colleen Irwin
