Going Indirect

What Is Going Indirect?

In platform mediumship, going indirect offers a different approach to connecting with Spirit. Rather than selecting one specific person, the medium describes the Spirit communicator and lets the audience claim the connection. It’s a Spirit-led process that allows multiple people to engage before narrowing down to the right recipient.

How It Works

When a medium goes indirect, they start by describing the Spirit—such as their appearance, personality, or shared memories. The audience listens for details that resonate, and if someone feels connected to the Spirit being described, they claim it. Once the connection is made, the medium continues delivering the message.

Going indirect relies heavily on evidential details—specific pieces of information that are strong enough to identify the Spirit communicator. Mediums using this method often need to present two or three strong pieces of evidence, so only one or two people can claim the connection.

Why Some Mediums Prefer It

Going indirect is often preferred by European mediums, who see it as a more Spirit-led approach. Rather than focusing on a specific person in the audience, the medium allows Spirit to guide the process. It fosters a more inclusive atmosphere, as several audience members may relate to the Spirit before the connection is claimed by one individual.

Some feel that going indirect offers a purer form of mediumship. Since the medium isn’t directly reading the recipient’s energy, it keeps the focus entirely on Spirit communication. This method allows the audience to see the medium work purely through Spirit’s guidance.

Why It’s Effective

The indirect method can be powerful because it builds a sense of community and inclusivity. The audience gets to participate in the process, and when the right connection is made, it often brings strong validation and comfort. The indirect method also emphasizes the strength of the evidence, providing reassurance that the message truly comes from Spirit.

Going indirect allows Spirit to take the lead, and the medium’s role is to interpret and present the message. It’s a method that shows the intelligence and guidance of Spirit in a unique and impactful way.
