If you have read my post about candle reading, you may notice similarities. Both practices involve candles, intuition, symbolism, and observation. So why call one candle reading and the other ceromancy?
The simplest answer is that they overlap, but their focus differs.
In Spiritualist candle reading, the candle becomes a focal point for mediumship. The medium may receive impressions while working with someone’s candle. Those impressions can include information about loved ones who have died. The candle provides a point of concentration while the medium works intuitively.
Ceromancy places more emphasis on the wax itself. Melted wax becomes the object being interpreted. A reader may allow wax to drip into water and form a shape. That shape then becomes part of the divination.
This creates an important distinction between the two practices. Candle reading often asks, “What am I receiving?” Ceromancy more often asks, “What do I see?”
Neither approach requires abandoning intuition. Both depend upon noticing something and interpreting its meaning. The difference lies primarily in where the reader places attention.
A candle reader might notice the flame, smoke, wax, or their own impressions. A ceromancer may study the cooled wax from several directions. A recognizable shape might suggest an animal, object, person, or symbol.
The practices can also overlap during a single reading. A medium might receive an impression while watching melted wax. A ceromancer might experience an intuitive response to a particular shape. There is no absolute boundary separating the two.
For me, the most useful distinction is one of emphasis. Candle reading is often about connection and communication. Ceromancy is more focused on symbolic interpretation.
That difference also explains why I find ceromancy interesting. The wax creates something tangible from an otherwise intangible question. You can examine the shape, turn it around, and notice what catches your attention.
