Is it time to quit Social Media?

There are a lot of people thinking that it might be time to quit Social Media.   I originally posted this on August 8, 2020 and as I rethink my social media I thought I would share this again.

Think about it, we are bombarded with negativity.  We are divided or separated and gasoline poured onto the flames of conflict.   There are people that are trying to control history and they are making many including myself, very uncomfortable.   Earlier this year my husband I saw this first hand with the Battle of the Baggage Claim that went completely viral.

I know that with all the time I have been spending recovering, I find Social Media less and less tolerable.    I take days away from it and have felt better every time I step away.  It has become more evident that I enjoy less Social Media more.  I leave my phone in another room all the time.   I rarely watch network news and when I do it is with caution.   In the disconnect from the Media and more specifically Social Media that I see things clearer.

I find it rather surprising that I feel this way, especially since the early days of Social Media saved me.   Emotionally I was isolated and I connected with several other REALTORS who helped me navigate a difficult time in my life.    I created some wonderful friends from that time.   Yet we all have found a need to have it in balance with the rest of our lives.

Social Media – the good and the bad

Today it is different for me, and I am pretty sure many others.    Too many people are living on Social Media and it is not good.    There is a heard mentality and so many people are losing the ability to think for themselves.   Worse yet I see too often where people are missing real interactions because they are paying attention to what is happening on-line rather than the people they are with.

I see it all over the place, and I am not comfortable.  Where did we go wrong?   Social Media was meant to connect us with each other and break down walls.   Instead it is making us more disconnected and the negativity around the world is worse than ever.

For me, it means disconnecting and being even more selective of what I participate in on Social Media.   This means not believing everything I read and do research on things that don’t make sense.    It is unsubscribing and unfollowing those that spew negativity.  Creating distance and space from my phone and the internet.   Reading books, magazines and newspapers.  Making sure I trust my own take on a situation and creating real lasting connections with others.

If you are struggling with all forms of Media and a general overload, take a break.    Put yourself on a Social Media Diet.   You may just surprise yourself on how good it feels.
