Know your worth

Knowing your worth is a deeply personal thing; and it really has nothing to do with anyone else. It’s your internal measure of how you value yourself no matter what other people might think of you or say to you.

I am referring to the simple truth that we all have worth — some may just not know it!  Are you one of those people? Those of us who don’t know our worth may consciously or unconsciously believe that we are worthless. When we believe that we are unworthy, that belief can affect everything from our thoughts, to our emotions, to our actions, to our experiences.  Ultimately to our own happiness.

How Does One Build Self Worth?

There really isn’t a one size fits all when it comes to knowing your own worth.   It is something that over time you learn.  Some learn this very early on in life.  Others it takes time.  It starts with our parents and how they raised us.  Then there are childhood friends, school that shape us into young adults.   As adults we find ourselves struggling.

Some of us, have poor examples growing up and we have to change the paradigm.  We have to work hard to build confidence in our selves.  Yes, I just said we.  I have struggled with this all my life.   My parents did not do a very good job of helping with my self-worth.  They put more emphasis on my younger brothers and their achievements.   Nothing I did was good enough, yet my younger brothers would do half of what I would and they got praised when I had be yelled at for not being more.

Reality is You Control your Self Worth

What happened as a child was on the adults in the room at the time.   What happens now is all on me — and you reading this.   It was a very hard thing for me to accept.   My therapist called it radical acceptance.   Accept the past and build the future you want.   Take pride in my accomplishments — even when they fall far from perfect.   As a Medium perfection is the enemy.  It took me a very long time to get rid of my parents disapproval when I didn’t get things absolutely perfect the first time.

My best advise if you are struggling with your self worth is start small.  Start loving yourself.   Create opportunities of joy in learning.   Over time you will find your confidence boosted.   You will get there.   It will take time and patience.   You are worth it!
